Wonder Has No Age Limit

Nature Engagement for Seniors Trust (N.E.S.T.) brings the simple joy of birdwatching to long-term care communities — giving residents a reason to look out the window, a reason to talk to each other, and a small piece of the natural world to belong to.

We fund and staff everything through grants and donations, so it costs residents and facilities nothing. We provide:

  • Feeder maintenance — Bird feeders on the grounds are cleaned and refilled twice a month.

    Educational talks — Presentations for residents on birds native to their area.

  • Live bird feed streaming (optional) — Closed-circuit streaming of the on-site feeders, or a live feed from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, viewable by residents indoors.

  • Resident docent visits (optional) — RNs or CNAs with a birding interest meet monthly with residents to talk about feeder activity and birds in general.

    Butterfly and Bird Garden pilot — A new initiative launching in Spring 2027.

Caring for those who cared for others.

50% of residents living in Medicaid-funded nursing homes worked full-time jobs such as teachers, nurses, receptionists, and clerks. 18% of those were forced to leave the workforce early to care for others or care for themselves due to illness.

25% of the residents were full-time caregivers to children or parents, often with disabilities.

They worked hard.
They deserve the best.
